CBS All Access

Streaming Channel Idea: Reality TV Channel App

By  |

Before we get too far into this, let me first say, I do understand that there already is/was a Reality Show Channel on some Cable TV stations. But to me, they’re missing the boat on doing this as a TV channel, rather than making this a focused streaming channel like Twitch for gamers, Daily Burn for fitness fans or YogaGlo.

My thinking on this is that people that like reality TV don’t just like all reality TV, meaning, they’ll just watch whatever’s on at any time. But if they’re able to go to the reality shows and types of reality shows that they like, then it would have a much bigger chance at success.

My plan has the networks all agreeing to split the revenue from the app, allowing their reality shows to basically be available on it. This sounds like it would never work – until you look at Hulu, which happens to be owned by all the companies that own ABC, Fox and NBC. CBS is the only holdout, which is because they stream all their stuff through a separate app called CBS Access (It must be good to be the king of TV!).

For the sake of this article, we’re going to imagine all four networks will play nicely in this joint venture!

We’re about to list off a ton of reality shows that have aired over the past 15-20 years, most of which came in the 2000s after “Survivor” became a pop culture phenomenon, spawning dozens of iterations.

Shows to Choose From on Reality Show Channel App

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the reality shows that have aired over the past couple decades, but these are some of the most popular. It should give you an idea of just how much variety would be on a reality show channel app for your Roku or whichever streaming device you use.

Celebrity Reality Shows: The Celebrity Mole, The Celebrity Apprentice, Kathy Griffin: My Life On the D List, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Celebrity Fit Club, I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, The Simple Life, Basketball Wives, Cribs, Hogan Knows Best, The Osbournes, The Surreal Life

Competition Reality Shows: Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, The Apprentice, The Mole, The Biggest Loser, Fear Factor, The Challenge (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), Road Rules, King of the Nerds, I Love Money, I Survived a Japanese Game Show, Wipeout, MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge), The Great American Road Trip

Cooking Reality Shows: Food Network Star, Hell’s Kitchen, Master Chef, Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Chopped, Kitchen Nightmares, The Great American Food Truck Race, The Next Iron Chef

Dating Reality Shows: The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Rock of Love, Flavor of Love, Beauty and the Geek, Couples Therapy, Daisy of Love, Charm School, I Love New York, The Pick-Up Artist

Regular Life Reality Shows: Real World, Jersey Shore, Cops, Deadliest Catch, Pawn Stars, Real Housewives Series, Celebrity Rehab, 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, The Hills, Dance Moms, Candid Camera, America’s Funniest Home Videos

Talent Reality Shows: American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, America’s Next Top Model, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, The Gong Show, Star Search, Last Comic Standing, Nashville Star, The Contender, American Ninja Warrior

Reality Show Parodies/Spoofs: The Office, Reno 911!, Drawn Together, The Comeback, Halfway Home, Simmer Heights High, Parks and Recreation, Real Husbands of Hollywood, The Joe Schmo Show, My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss

Some of these shows lasted for just a few seasons, like VH1’s “Rock of Love” or ABC’s “The Mole,” but there are a lot shows that have double-digit seasons under their belt.

Now, imagine having one channel that you’d go to on your Roku that had all of these shows available to you, and you could sit down and binge-watch the entire second season of “Survivor” or the Gary Busey year of “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

In my opinion, these reruns have been on the shelf long enough! Fans of reality TV shows would love to go back and watch the first season of “The Bachelor” or “Big Brother”! There’s almost an entire generation of people that were kids that missed out on some of this insanity!

Original Content Surrounding Reality TV

Finally, I think there are a lot of new shows that could be created based on all of these older reality shows. Some are talk shows, but some have a little more depth to them.

Where Are They Now?

This is the easiest one to produce, of course, as the show could track down some of the members to see what they’re up to. There are plenty of “All-Star” versions of these shows, so people are interested in seeing more of certain characters.

Reality Show Talk Show

This could be like a version of Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live” on Bravo, where a host (possibly a former reality show contestant?) sits down with stars, hosts and producers of some of the best reality shows in history for an hour-long breakdown. I want to hear about Jeff Probst’s scariest moments on “Survivor” and I want to hear from Jay Mohr about how he had “Last Comic Standing” wrestled away from him.

Reality Show Pitches

This could be a fun show, where writers come on to pitch their idea of a reality show, and maybe they act it out or have fake re-enactments of what it would look like and how it would run.

So these are my ideas for a new reality TV show channel app for our favorite streaming devices. I think that fans of reality TV shows would love to binge-watch some of their old favorites – and a bunch of shows they missed the first time around! Now, we just need to convince the networks to play nice and release all of these shows for our channel!

If there was a reality TV show channel app, which reality shows would you like to binge-watch the most?
